Ask a Gardener: When to Plant?

Question: Since it’s been such an unseasonably warm winter, how will that affect the planting season?  Should we plant earlier than usual?  Any suggestions of what to plant when?

  1. You can plant lots of stuff right now. All kinds of greens can be put in the ground now, and cilantro, radishes and peas too! And once night temperatures stay in the high 50s the summer plants can go in: basil, beans, squash, tomato, cukes, etc.

  2. I didn't start the early season planting any earlier than usual. Frost-tollerant crops can be direct sown (seeds, not seedlings) really early, regardless of a hot or cold March, if there's no snow on the ground. Peas and fava beans should be in the ground by April 1, and most greens and root vegetables should go in late March to early April, but later is also okay. We've already planted lettuce, arugula, spinach, chard, kale, collards, kohlrabi, radishes, turnips, carrots, parsnips, beets, cilantro and potatoes. Last year we planted the same things when it was still below freezing and all grew well...but slowly.
